Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a condition in which weakened valves in leg veins cannot send sufficient amounts of blood back to the heart. When the one-way valves in legs are damaged, blood flows backwards. Over 25 million people in the United States are affected by CVI, and approximately 24 million have varicose veins, an indicator of CVI.* Early detection is ideal in order to take advantage of the broadest range of treatment options (incorporating lifestyle changes as well as invasive and non-invasive therapy options).
For at-risk groups, including smokers and men and women over 50 years of age, being informed about this venous disease is especially essential. Symptoms of CVI include painful or swollen legs, varicose veins in the legs and heavy or tired legs. Testing can help determine if you have CVI and whether medical or surgical treatment is necessary. BioMedix™’s PADnet™+ venous test can be completed in 5-10 minutes during a regular office visit.
BioMedix™, the Vascular Disease Foundation and the Venous Disease Coalition are working together to promote early detection and prevention of this disease. The materials provided below answer key questions about risk factors and symptoms for CVI, to help patients decide whether or not to get tested and give tips to reduce their susceptibility to the disease. There is also a guide that explains what to expect during an examination for CVI.
